Introduction to DaVinci Resolve 21

Blackmagic Design has introduced DaVinci Resolve 21, a professional video editing and color correction software packed with innovative tools and features. This update includes a dedicated Photo page that extends its renowned color grading capabilities to still photography. For the first time, photographers can utilize powerful tools like primary color correction, curves, qualifiers, and node-based edits for their images. These adjustments maintain the original source resolution, ensuring high-quality outcomes.

The new LightBox view enhances photo organization by displaying entire albums with grades applied. Additionally, the software supports direct tethering for Sony and Canon cameras, allowing users to capture photos directly into albums. This marks a significant step in bridging the gap between video editing and photography workflows.

AI-Driven Enhancements

A prominent feature of this update is its integration of artificial intelligence. The IntelliSearch tool indexes media, allowing editors to search for specific objects, spoken keywords, or even individual faces. This feature simplifies media management and speeds up the editing process.

Another AI-powered tool, CineFocus, lets users adjust a shots focal point after recording. It also enables the addition of bokeh effects, offering greater creative flexibility. Facial tools can now age or de-age subjects, reshape features, and remove blemishes, making it easier to achieve desired visual effects without external plugins.

Improved Tools for Video Quality

DaVinci Resolve 21 introduces UltraSharpen and Motion Deblur, which are designed to address issues with soft or blurry footage. These tools allow editors to salvage low-quality shots and maintain professional standards. The improved keyframing functionality now includes four-point Bezier easing and supports adjustments across multiple clips simultaneously.

Fusion effects have also been enhanced, allowing direct modifications from the Cut and Edit pages. This streamlined approach makes it easier to integrate effects into workflows without switching between multiple interfaces.

Text and Graphics Enhancements

The text handling capabilities in DaVinci Resolve 21 have been expanded to include multi-language spell check, a comprehensive font browser, emoji support, and character-level styling. These features are designed to provide greater flexibility for content creators working with diverse languages and text styles.

New support for OGraf HTML graphics and Lottie animations allows users to drag and drop JSON and Lottie files directly into the media pool. These files are treated as fully rendered animation clips, opening up new possibilities for incorporating complex visual elements into projects.

Streamlined Color Grading and Deliverables

The MultiMaster trim manager is a valuable addition for colorists, enabling the creation of multiple HDR and SDR deliverables from a single timeline. This feature saves significant time and ensures consistency across different output formats. The Cut page now includes smart bins, which help organize projects more effectively, making it easier to manage large-scale editing tasks.

With these updates, DaVinci Resolve 21 continues to cater to the growing demands of both video editors and photographers. Its enhanced capabilities position it as a powerful tool for creative professionals seeking precision and efficiency in their workflows.
